Speech and Language Assessments

In discussion with the family, a plan will be developed to decide which communication skills may need assessing. Unlike at a children’s treatment centre or a school board, an assessment by a private Speech-Language Pathologist may cover just one skill area or many. For example, one family may choose to have just the speech sounds of their child assessed, another may want a complete assessment of the understanding and use of language of their child, while a family of a toddler who is not yet speaking may need a general overview of whether or not their child is developing communication skills appropriately.

Assessment may include a review of medical and developmental history, discussion with the family and any caregivers/educators, review of school work, formal and/or informal assessment tasks, observation during play, etc. Following the assessment, a report or summary page may be written, at the request of the family.

With a completed communication assessment and brief report, your child may be eligible for a range of services provided by children’s treatment centres. Having a completed assessment can make it easier to obtain therapy or treatment, without needing to be wait-listed for an initial assessment.
