Child In Speech Therapy

Language Skills Support

Children may present with difficulties with understanding of language (receptive language), use of language (expressive language), and/or social use of language (pragmatics). Some children with use speech to communicate, while others will use signs or gestures, sounds, pictures, and/or technology instead of or in addition to words to communicate.

Children with receptive language weaknesses may have difficulty following directions, understanding words, concepts, and sentences, and answering questions. They may have a blank look at times when being spoken to, give an answer that does not make sense, or not respond at all.

Children with expressive language weaknesses may have grammar errors, mix up the order of words in sentences, have difficulty explaining how words are related, giving explanations, naming pictures, using specific words on demand, staying on topic, and/or telling a story that makes sense.

Children with pragmatics difficulties may not know how to interpret the facial expressions of others, how to make or keep friends, how to express or understand emotions, or how to act or speak in different social situations.

Language therapy may address a combination of areas that are challenging for your child. Therapy may include parent education, direct practice activities, strategies to use at home or at school, and/or home practice activities.
